Wellesley Hoyt, Retired Mine Operator, New Castle

I started from the bare, bare bottom and worked my way up to the top in both strip and underground mining.

There's not a job in the strip-mining field that I haven't done with my own hands. Our name is of Dutch origin. My father was born in New Brunswick. He worked in hardrock mines and became a self-educated mining engineer in Texas.

He came back to New Brunswick and started an Antimony Mine near Fredericton. In 1927, he began coal mining for the Miramichi Lumber Company in Minto. He was here until he died, eleven years ago.
